From 1961 to 1977, Howard and Jane served as missionaries in Sao Paulo, where Howard did local church work, taught in the Sao Paulo Preacher Training School, and served for several years as the director of that school. Jane led numerous women’s ministries among the Brazilians.
They have taken summer campaign groups to Brazil or the Czech Republic nearly every summer since 1977. Jane serves as the family travel agent and has used her teaching skills to teach Portuguese to numerous mission teams moving to Brazil and for many years taught a course on The Missionary Woman at Oklahoma Christian University. She is a real encourager of others who want to serve as missionaries, using her gift of hospitality and words of encouragement. This attitude was evident even when her own daughter and son-in-law, Laurie and Alan Diles, decided to serve in Prague, Czech Republic.
Howard Norton grew up in Fort Worth and has been preaching since 1951 when he was in high school. He is married to the former Jane Pearce, whom he met at Abilene Christian University. They have three adult children and eight grandchildren.
Howard received his Masters degree from the University of Houston and his Doctor of Human Sciences degree from the University of Sao Paulo in Brazil.
Howard was the editor of The Christian Chronicle from 1981-1996. He also wrote The Eldership and the Missionary: A Manual for Independent Missions.
Norton was an associate editor of the Bible correspondence course entitled What the Bible Says, which circulates today in several different languages. He co-edited the book entitled Steps into the Mission Field: Group Evangelism, From First Concepts to First Converts, which was written by the Sao Paulo Mission Team.
The Nortons now live in Searcy, Arkansas, where Howard serves as the assistant dean for church relations at Harding University. He is editor of Harding's Church & Family magazine and is a professor of Bible in Harding's College of Bible and Religion.
The Norton’s daughter Laurie states that her father could not be the person he is unless her mother was the person she is. We would agree. Jane is Howard’s enabler and is ready to go at the drop of a passport.
Howard serves as a missions consultant with the Continent of Great Cities ministry, is one of the directors of the Pan American and Pan European Lectureships, and is a Trustee of Missions Resource Network.
