Praying for Buddhists

I’m grateful that you’ve signed up to pray with me and my coworkers here at MRN through this blog. It means a lot that you, too, are eager to learn about new ways to pray, new emphases, and new rhythms. This is an enjoyable space to me, where we can all learn together what it means to pray with thanksgiving and without ceasing.

Something else I’m really grateful for is that three times a year, we get to facilitate seasons of prayer for those practicing one of the world’s major religions. We get to highlight the voices of cross-cultural workers in the area as well as local leaders in Christian communities surrounded by their non-Christ-following friends and family.

We recently took ten days to pray for the world’s 500,000,000 (actually, a few more) Buddhists. This was in the lead up their holiday of Dharma Day, a day on which they celebrate the first time their message was taught from the Buddha to his disciples. We took time to pray both for workers and for national Christians. As a taste of what we do during these prayer challenges, I’m asking you to pray the following this month.

  • Pray for the young people of major Buddhist cities like Chiang Mai, Thailand. Pray against depression and for hope and meaning in Jesus.

  • Pray for Buddhist clergy, those who have dedicated their lives to serve in Buddhist temples. Ask that God would miraculously begin a movement among (former!) Buddhist priests.

  • Pray for God to call more workers among Buddhist people groups. As an example of the need, there is one full-time Christian worker for every 221 Americans. There is one full-time Christian worker for every 233,000 Buddhists! We need the Father to call more workers! While you’re at it, praise Him for families like the Wayne family who have chosen to dedicate these years of their lives to service among Buddhists.

  • Finally, allow your mind to think on the faces of those Buddhists you know or see often in your life. Pray for them, just as you pray for our brothers and sisters who have come to follow Jesus out of Buddhism, people like Trung Duy and Ahn Dung in Vietnam and Chaichanna in Thailand.

Thank you for praying, friend. If you’d like to join us for our next prayer challenge, click here to sign up to pray with us for Hindus through their season of Diwali.

Peace.

Andy
